What is hyperbaric oxygen therapy?

Who can benefit from Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy?

This type of therapy can help a range of conditions, including:

  • Patients who have received radiation as part of certain cancer treatments
  • Radionecrosis
  • Osteomyelitis
  • Actinomycosis
  • Carbon monoxide poisoning
  • Decompression sickness
  • Certain infections
  • Acute or traumatic inadequate blood flow in the arteries
  • Compromised skin grafts
  • Air or gas bubble trapped in a blood vessel
  • Diabetic wounds that are not healing properly

Who can't have it?

It’s important to note that Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy is not for everyone. It should not be used if you have:

  • A cold, fever or respiratory infection.
  • Recently had ear surgery or ear trauma
  • Certain types of lung disease

Before beginning Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy, we recommend that you consult with your doctor to make sure that this treatment is right for you.

What happens in a session?

When you arrive for your session, Kelly will talk you through the treatment and answer any questions, and you will need to fill out a consent form.

Because of safety regulations, please do not bring anything that could fuel or ignite a fire into the treatment room. This includes:

  • Hairspray and deodorant
  • Electronic devices
  • Cigarette lighters
Kelly will remain in the room at all times to monitor the oxygen and pressure levels, and help you with any concerns. You’ll lie down and get comfortable in the chamber, which sits at floor level with a supportive bed inside. You can choose to listen to music or a meditation during the session, and you may like to fall asleep.

While in the chamber, you breathe in the oxygen while the pressure inside the chamber is slowly increased. Your session time will depend on your personal needs. After the session is over, you have the choice to drink Ozone Water, which is water that has been treated by a natural ozonation process. This water provides you with higher levels of oxygen and can help to detoxify the body.

What are the potential side effects and risks?

During or after the treatment, some people may experience a temporary feeling of ear pain or “popping”. Before beginning Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy, we recommend that you consult with your doctor to make sure that this treatment is right for you.

Benefits Of Oxygen Therapy

  • Supports the body’s healing process: Increased oxygen levels in the body helps to build and repair damaged blood vessels, and stimulates the body’s healing response system. It can also promote collagen growth, which aids healing. The elevated pressure during a session further increases oxygen levels.
  • Reduced healing time: If used as part of a complete treatment plan, Hyperbaric Oxygen therapy can help your body to heal three to five times faster than it otherwise would.
  • Increased circulation and reduced swelling: Oxygen helps increase your circulation, while the mild pressure during a session can help reduce swelling in the body, which can also increase blood flow.
  • Aids healing from infections: Oxygen helps the body to create new white blood cells, which can support the healing of infections.
  • Supports blood vessel formation: Over time, increased oxygen levels in the body can help support the formation of new blood vessels.
  • Supports reduced anxiety and stress: Increased levels of oxygen in your brain can create a calming feeling, which may reduce feelings of anxiety and stress.
